As of October 11, 2024, the Elk Fire is burning in the Bighorn National Forest in northern Wyoming (1). The fire has spread across a vast area of forestland - over 75,000 acres - and is impacting communities in and around Sheridan County and threatening additional infrastructure, including the Little Bighorn Canyon.

As of October 11, the Elk Fire is 15% contained (3). The fire has recently grown from high winds and low humidity, lowering the containment from 16%. Firefighting efforts continue along multiple fronts as over 900 firefighters and support personnel have been working to contain the fire.
